Local’s Guide to Queen City Mischief & Magic
Every fall, Downtown Staunton casts a spell over the Valley with Queen City Mischief & Magic (QCMM). What began as a small gathering of wizarding fans has grown into a full-blown festival that transforms our historic downtown into a world of enchantment. Whether you’ve been attending for years or you’re curious about checking it out for the first time, here’s everything you need to know to enjoy QCMM like a local.
When to Go
While Saturday is the busiest and most high-energy day of the festival, locals know the best times to visit:
Friday Evening – The magic kicks off with costumed characters, themed photo ops, and plenty of treats—without the wall-to-wall crowds.
Sunday Afternoon – A perfect time for families and those who like to take things at a slower pace. You’ll still find performances, themed dining, and characters wandering about.
Can’t-Miss Experiences
There’s so much to see and do at QCMM, but a few events rise to the top of the must-see list:
Arrival at the Train Station: Staunton’s historic train station becomes the gateway to magic as QCMM’s faculty and younger student characters arrive by train. Arrivals happen Saturday and Sunday at 9:30 AM and 2:30 PM—a highlight that draws cheers and sets the tone for the weekend.
Character Dinner: A festival tradition! This immersive dining experience lets you sit down with QCMM characters for an entertaining meal of themed fun. Check the schedule for different opportunities.
Quidditch Matches
Yes, you read that right. Watch teams take to the field on Saturday at 1:30 & 5:30 PM, with the championship on Sunday at 3:30 PM. See the schedule.
What’s New This Year
QCMM always brings fresh magic, and 2025 has plenty in store:
Murder by Fortune – A brand-new murder mystery dinner hosted at The Blackburn Inn & Conference Center. Solve the whodunit while enjoying a magical evening out. Get tickets.
Puffs, or Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic – This clever play by Matt Cox tells the story of wizarding school from the overlooked “Puffs” perspective. Expect laughs, heart, and plenty of recognition for anyone who’s ever felt like a background character. Learn more.
Dementor Dance Party – A new Saturday night event on Beverley Street where costumed characters, music, and themed fun bring the festival to life after dark.
Where to Eat & Drink
One of the best parts of QCMM is indulging in themed food and drink. Butter beer flows all weekend, but if you’re looking to avoid the long lines on Beverley Street, branch out a bit:
Wharf District – Try Byers Street Bistro, Depot Grille, or The Frenchman for hearty meals.
Central Avenue – Magdalena Bake and Big Red BBQ
Exploring beyond Beverley Street is a win-win—you’ll skip the longest waits and discover some of Staunton’s best local dining.
Parking & Shuttles
Downtown parking fills quickly, so plan ahead:
Garages – New Street and Johnson Street garages are available but limited.
Shuttles – On Saturday, free shuttles run from Staunton Mall (Pendleton Community Bank entrance, 478 Frontier Dr.) from 8 AM–10 PM. This is the easiest way to avoid the stress of downtown parking.
Insider Tips for Locals
